The 1st Annual Picasso Open was held in Narragansett, Rhode Island, on September 24, 2000. The day began with overcast skies and a forecast of growing seas later in the day. On that day, Freedivers from around the country entered Rhode Island waters in search of the most diverse catch and title of Picasso Open Tournament Champion.

The title of Tournament Champion went to David Hochman of Connecticut. Anne Doherty of Massachusetts won the Womens Division and also finished in the top 10 overall.

One year later, RI Picasso Open 2001 attracted the most freedivers of all North America's freediving events that year, including the US Nationals! 68 freedive hunters competed that day.

The presentation of prizes and the raffle that followed was the most generous ever seen by the freediving community, as over $10,000 in Picasso gear was given away. The winner of the event was David Biron of Rhode Island. 2002 saw more prizes than divers and all competitors went home with gear.

It's a classic!

The Annual Rhode Island Picasso Open has become the most popular yearly event in Rhode Island, attended by freedivers from all over the world. Won't you join us for the 5th Annual Picasso Open?

Spear fishing is the only way to practice "Release before you Catch" rather than "Catch and Release" as is practiced by all other forms of fishing. A spear fisher is given the opportunity to select an individual fish and let the rest swim by, rather than stressing and endangering several fish until a suitable one is caught.

A Species Meet was created to determine the most proficient FreeDive Spear Fisher by establishing rules in which diversity, rather than total aggregate weight, of a catch will prove who the best really is.
